What Is a Flat Belt Pulley?

Flat belt pulleys operate machinery, usually driven by a single power source. Although appearing flat, flat pulleys are machined with a slight pitch and work in tandem with opposing pulleys on the drive shaft; pulleys on a machine or tool help keep the belt on the equipment and not come off running on the belt.

A typical flat pulley design consists of a heavy cast iron pulley with a keyed center hole. This keyhole allows the pulley to slide onto the solid steel drive shaft and is prevented from slipping by the keyway and retaining bolt. To remove some unnecessary weight and help the unit stay cool, most smooth wheel designs use spoke centers instead of solid steel centers in pulleys.

In early manufacturing plants, a single engine was used to power all the machinery and tools in the plant. This is achieved through a series of drive shafts and pulleys that pass through the factory ceiling. Each workstation has its own pull-down flat belt and flat pulley, which are driven from an overhead system of drive shafts and power-specific equipment for each workstation.

The worker simply uses the tensioner to tighten the belt, and the workstation is powered up. It’s a lot like engaging a kind of clutch that brings the workstation’s tools and machinery to life.

Cast Iron Pulleys

Pulleys are usually made of cast iron due to their low cost. The rim is held in place by a net or arms or spokes of a central boss.

Steel Pulleys

Steel pulleys are made of pressed steel sheets for high strength and durability. These pulleys are lighter (approximately 40% to 60% lighter) than cast iron pulleys of the same capacity and are designed to operate at high speeds.

The paper wheel is made of compressed paper fibers with metal in the center. These pulleys are often used for belt drives of electric motors when the center-to-center shaft distance is small.

Flat belt pulleys are designed to transmit power and speed through flat belts. The construction of the smoothing wheel is based on the DIN 111 standard.
The most common design is a smooth wheel with a round contact surface. Rounding ensures that the flat belt is centered during operation. For some transmissions, circular flat pulleys with cylindrical contact surfaces or with outer shoulders (with collars) can be used.

Grey cast iron flat pulleys are mounted on the shaft using Taper Lock tapered bushings or cylindrical holes and keys. Flat pulleys can be made of steel, aluminium or plastic according to drawings or specific requirements.

The Benefits

Flat belt pulleys have several advantages over round or curved pulleys. The symmetrical position of the pulleys and the flat shape of the belt prevent the belt from protruding from the center of the pulley. This also means that the tension on the belt is evenly distributed. Also, this type of pulley prevents the belt from jumping off the pulley.


Another advantage of flat pulleys is that they can be coupled with another pulley. This type of pulley is particularly advantageous for power transmission over long distances. It can be associated with larger-diameter pulleys without stopping rotation. Flat belts can be switched from one pulley diameter to another without pausing the cycle.
